After so many lectures on Nature&Society, I finally got the gist of it. It's all about human's exploitation of nature. This module view human beings in a negative manner.
Last week and this week's lectures talk about the relationship between human beings and animals. I like studying such topics, but the videos shown? Not so much.
Last week's video was on a chick hatchery in one of the Western countries.
It shows the chicks being handled roughly, thrown onto the conveyor belts and stuff. Then there'll be workers sorting out the female and males chicks. They simply just flick the male chicks into this tube that goes down onto another conveyor belt.
The scene that has been constantly on my mind for the whole week: The male chicks on the conveyor belt falls into this grinder, grinding them all to death.
This is because female chicks are deemed as more valuable than male chicks. They lay eggs.
This week's video was much more gruesome. At least the chick hatchery video didn't involve splattering blood and screamings.
We watched an hour of Earthlings. It started off with the animals in the Holocaust, which seem so fine. Then they showed animals as food. How human beings slaughter pigs, cows and birds. The process of slaughtering the cows were the most cruel.
They had brandings, where these marks are burned onto the cows' faces. Dehorning occurs, WITHOUT anesthetics. Imagine a part of you being twisted off with a plier. After throat slitting and having their guts hanging from their body, the cows were still struggling.
I totally lost my appetite for dinner. Thank goodness the lecturer decided to skip the seafood part. Well, at least no blood involved in the killing of seafood.
Frankly speaking, I'm a meat lover. I'm an omnivore who tend towards the carnivorous side. The only greens that I eat are the soft and leafy sort.
Watching this video won't make me become a vegetarian. I don't think I'll survive, but I'll eat less. I don't enjoy eating pork cos it's so hard. And beef, I don't think I'd want to touch it again after watching that video. Plus it's bloody.
And people who buy authentic fur clothings should go watch these videos. Plain animal cruelty.
