I miss the time back when we were all 10 year olds, staying back in school to play catch and calling up one another's homes to chat about random stuff.
That was when friendship was sincere.
That was also when the bonds we formed were really strong.
Then there was the creation of handphones, and we started to contact one another via SMS.
Facebook and twitter are the current social networks that determine the way we communicate.
Whatsapp is replacing SMS and MMS.
There was a period when I was hooked onto facebook, checking updates on newsfeed every now and then. After signing up for a twitter account, I started communicating with friends whom I would not have any contact without the twitter account. I've been relying so much on these social networks to communicate with friends, so much so I've forgotten how it was like to invite friends to a social gathering before.
I've been thinking.
These social networks really do dilute person to person relationships. Instead of meeting up face to face for catch up sessions, people comment on one another's photos or write on walls. And strangers judge you base on what they see on your profile page.
How much information can you provide via those forms of communication?
Friends who care about you would bother to call you up, not leave a message on your wall or tweet you.
I can count with 1 hand the number of people I chat with over the phone and these are the friends I've met before the creation of these social websites.
So I'm going to spend less time on facebook/twitter, and eventually stop using them altogether.
Or maybe just use them to view photos.
Well, you may say I'll end up having less friends but if I have to keep in contact with these people via these mediums, I don't think they are my real friends. Friends do not keep in contact with one another via social networks. Plus it'd be hard to maintain a friendship over social networks. Eventually, you'll lose contact with one another.
I'll see how it goes.
Maybe I'll end up with people who are sincere about being friends?
