Save the Mekong!
On the 19th of April, a crucial decision will be made over the fate of the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. The governments of Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam will decide whether to build the first dam on the lower Mekong mainstream, the Xayaburi Dam. Located in northern Laos, this dam is the first of 11 large hydropower dams that – if built – would devastate the world’s most productive freshwater fishery.
The Xayaburi Dam would unleash massive ecological change to a river that feeds millions of people. It would forcibly resettle over 2,100 people and directly affect over 202,000 people, and could drive critically endangered fish species, such as the Mekong Giant Catfish, to extinction.
The region’s governments are divided about whether or not to approve the Xayaburi Dam – your voice can make a difference. Please send the governments a message today letting them know that the citizens of the world care about a free-flowing Mekong River.
